Employee Retention Techniques for New Hires

December 18, 2019

Few things are more exciting in business than the potential for growth. However, growth is relative and requires a dedication to not only improving things but keeping essentials in place.

Such is the story with managing employee satisfaction. It’s exciting to add new hires to the already-successful business culture, but now you need to retain them.

The attempt at retaining new hires starts as soon as they accept your job offer. From there, you need to prove why your company is the place they want to be.

Here are several employee retention techniques you can use to keep top-level talent in house.

1. Show Them the Ropes In-Depth

An obvious part of onboarding your company’s new hires is showing them how things work and what their daily tasks look like.

However, there’s a common misconception that you shouldn’t list out every detail of their job in fear of overwhelming them. But in not doing so, you risk them not knowing how to carry out all the job duties of their new position.

It won’t take long for them to become frustrated with the lack of detailed training they received and, before long, they’ll be scoping out new opportunities elsewhere.

Figure out ways of incorporating the skills they need to get started and nailing down a few job duties at a time.

There’s nothing wrong with listing out everything for them on the first day. It sets the tone for the position you’ve hired them to do. However, you’ll need to find little teaching moments each day to go further in-depth on how things work and the tasks they need to do.

2. Competitive Employee Benefits

One way to separate your company from any other company your employees may entertain working for is offering a competitive benefits package.

It shows them that you care about the employee and their family’s well-being. You want to show them that you have their back when life comes knocking at their door.

Things such as health insurance, 401(k) plans, and dental commuting won’t take their breath away. Every reasonable company offers those. Instead, you want to find different benefits to incorporate and make your company unique.

Different things such as working remotely a few days a week or being able to adjust their schedules around things like attending their kids’ sports games will go a long way.

Benefits like these show the integrity and wholesomeness of your company that they won’t be able to find anywhere else.

3. Run Frequent Contests

Not even the most introverted employees want to come into work each day and do their job for 8-hours without social interaction.

They want to feel that they’re a part of a much larger picture. Making sure all your employees stay as social and as engaged with each other as possible should be a top priority in retaining them.

Running frequent contests, no matter how big or small will improve team chemistry and break the social barriers among departments and experience levels.

Better yet, there are tremendous apps that can promote real-life interactions and help your employees connect with others on a whole other level.

Have all of your employees download the app to be alerted anytime a contest is taking place in your office. Whether it’s a March Madness bracket challenge, a secret Santa, or just a surprise birthday celebration all employees will be alerted.

While it may seem counterproductive to install competitive contests, nothing brings people together faster than a good old-fashioned form of competition.

4. Encourage Them to Use Their Skills

One of the key ingredients to retaining employees and keeping them satisfied is by keeping them motivated in your workplace.

A best practice for doing that is to encourage all your employees to use both their skills and their talents.

Just because your new employee was hired for sales doesn’t mean they don’t want to partake in marketing endeavors. They may have a talent for creative design you weren’t previously aware of.

Provide an atmosphere in which your employees can come in and discuss their interest in using their skills in your company. Ask them how they feel their talents can best be used in your day-to-day operations.

Showing that you’re open to ideas will help them see how vested you are in using all the potential within your in-house employees.

5. Show Them the Brand

Now that you’ve hired more talent for your company, they’re part of the brand. You need to make sure they realize that and believe that.

Start by giving them a history of the company and the ideology it has. Show them the mission statement, introduce them to all top executives, show them around to every department. Give them a thorough understanding of how the entire company operates as one.

As soon as you show them that, they’ll start to envision themselves as part of the team and strive to become a key cog in your operations for years to come.
